If Gender Roles Didn't Matter in Agriculture

While I was raised to be a strong and independent woman, and I am not afraid of a challenge I do also realize that sometimes men are just genetically built different than women, thus enabling them to be better at certain things. However, while it might be easier for men to do some things, that doesn't mean that it isn't possible for women to do it. It just might take longer.

So what if women started to dominate the world of farming?

There are already a lot of women who run farming operations themselves and are doing great things for agriculture, so what would happen if there were more?

First it would help equalize the patriarchy of men ruling society, men would have to take a step back and reevaluate their roles in the business. This could cause some conflict, since men have been the primary farmers for years and a lot of them like to drive tractors and play in the dirt, they wouldn't want to lose that role. However, wouldn't it be great if everyone worked together more?

Second, having more women as primary farmers would help show the younger generation that girls can work hard and play in the dirt too, which is something that I think we need in society as kids have to deal with gender issues.

Third, it would help build a larger sense of community, yes men all have their farming buddies that they talk to, and they help each other out, but women band together more than men by nature. Think about the amount of teamwork that would be happening if more women were out in the fields.

While I hope that more women are able to take over and start farming operations in the future because it will be good for all groups of people in different ways, I will continue to root for those who are already making their own way and pursuing their dreams.
