Muck Chore Boots: First Hand (foot) Review

If you've ever spent any time on a farm you know that it gets muddy, like really muddy, so it is important to have a good pair of boots by the door for any occasion. For a lot of years all of us girls in my house wore the Rural King $20 specials because they came in cute designs and did the job for the little things we were doing. However, they didn't last long and would quickly crack and get holes, which meant wet feet. Gross. I finally decided that I needed to get myself some serious rubber boots. After a quick trip to the farm store I came home with a pair of Muck Chore Boots. After a little over 2 years later I still have that same pair here are my thoughts.

Why did I pick them?

First let's talk about why I initially bought them. Going into the store I was pretty set on buying Muck brand boots because I had heard such great things about them (fully waterproof, comfortable, warm, durable).  I tried on several pairs of the women's styles (I really wanted purple boots) and they didn't have my size. After digging around I found my size in the Chore Boot which is marketed a little more towards men-so no fun colors. I liked that they were sturdier and roomy, but not to the point that my foot would slide. These were also the style that my father gets minus the steel toe, so I figured they could work for me as well, and I went home with them.

Here's a picture for reference of the boots I got
You can find them for sale here.

Pros

Overall they have been a good pair of boots, I don't wear them everyday, but even after 2 years if I cleaned them up a little, they would probably look almost new. They really are very sturdy. They keep my feet dry like they're supposed to and they stay decently warm in the winter. They are easy to slip on when I have them rolled down, and I feel comfortable wearing them with the cows because they are made of pretty hard rubber which would provide at least some protection if I got stepped on by a cow. I also like that they are not completely made of rubber and have the neoprene material on the leg part which is smooth to the touch and more comfortable than traditional rubber boots.

Cons

As with anything I do have a few complaints, I have to roll down the tops of the boots to make them shorter otherwise they are very tight on my calves which is not comfortable. This doesn't bother me too much because I like shorter boots, but it is inconvenient if I have to go through deeper mud or slop, and the inside of the boot that faces out gets dirty. I will unroll them if I have to, it just makes them feel like they're suctioned to my legs.

Example of how I roll down my boots

Rubber boots in general can be hot and these are not an exception. While I know that Muck has been making changes to help this, the particular pair I have still makes my feet and legs pretty warm if it is a balmy day. Sweat lines on your pants from your boots is not a fashionable look. They are also a little heavy and clunky due to the sturdier and more built up design compared to some of their other boots, which I knew they would be when I picked them out so that is more of an observation.

Price Point

I plan to continue wearing these boots until I can't anymore because they do their job well and because  I want to get my money's worth. I think for the quality they are priced appropriately, but the $120-150 price tag might be more than some people are willing to spend on rubber boots that step in manure. I, however, will stay a pretty loyal fan to the company because of their excellent quality.

Final Say

If you're out working cattle everyday or working with equipment and machinery I think the Chore Boot is a great option, however if that's not your style and you just want a boot for gardening or the occasional rainy day I would suggest looking into some of Muck's other styles that are lighter.

These are one of the lighter, cuter boots Muck offers for women.
They have so many cute styles on their website.
